Abstract

In some regions of Brazil, the word fandango preserves the meaning of a festive community event revolving around music and dance –a product of miscegenation, from a tradition that dates back to colonial times. Fandangos caiçara have reached a critical continuity point as a consequence of environmental depredation, real estate speculation and the alteration of community subsistence modes of the caiçara population, resulting in multiple social and institutional projects for their research and revitalization throughout the last decades. The following pages explain the fandango caiçara safeguarding process initiated by the pioneering work of the Museu Vivo do Fandango, articulating social, institutional and cultural agents.
