Abstract

In the literature on flamenco, a term "cante jondo" is closely associated with the Competition of Cante Jondo held in Granada in 1922. However, it is worth asking what the importance of "cante jondo" was before 1922? Throughout this work, we study the meaning of "cante jondo" in a specified period of time (18811922). It will let us understand the condition in which this area of music was prior to the Competition. The starting point for the study is the Colección de cantes flamencos by Demófilo, from which we extract the definition of "lo jondo". Also, we address various articles published in newspapers and magazines of the time to get an idea of the connotations that the termhad.
